Bozen earns championship title in overtime

HC Bozen became champions of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga in their debut season. On Sunday, the foxes beat EC Red Bull Salzburg 3:2 on the road with Ziga Pance becoming the hero in overtime.

In the first ten minutes of the fifth, deciding final-game between EC Red Bull Salzburg and HCB Südtirol the Foxes surprised with a lot of pressure, Mark Tomassoni had the first big chance, but his shot didn’t hit the net. On the other side Dominique Heinrich and Andreas Nödl had some dangerous shots on the net of HCB-goalie Jaroslav Hübl, but couldn’t score either. The Red Bulls took advantage of the first powerplay of the night and took the lead in the eleventh minute. Dave Meckler capitalized on a rebound in front of the net and made it 1:0 for the home team. After the lead the pressure of Salzburg became bigger, but Bozen didn’t let any other goal against them happen.

The answer of the Foxes came in the 27th minute. In their first one-man-advantage of the game defender Sebastien Pichè’s shot from the slot found the net and tied the game. Although Red Bull Salzburg could take the second lead of the game just two minutes later, again in the powerplay, the Foxes managed to bounce back for the second time. In a two-man-advantage MacGregor Sharp scored by a rebound in the 35th minute and made it 2:2, whgat was also the result after 40 minutes.

The Bulls were strong on the PK early in the third and in further consequence both teams were temporized. After some eventless minutes, the Bulls had some good chances but Joe Motzko and Manuel Latusa failed on solo attempts. The visitors were lucky when Matthias Trattnig only hit the post and because of this the game went into overtime. The hosts missed some great opportunities right after the restart and soon after also Bozen created more and more. After 72 minutes Ziga Pance decided the championship with a one timer. With the 3:2 win, HC Bozen became champion of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga in the debut season.
