Capitals missed the finals
UPC Vienna Capitals dream to win the Red Bulls Salute 2012 ended today in the semi-finals: The Capitals lost against Lulea Hockey 0:2. The Swedes moved to the finals in Bratislava, while the Capitals had to say goodbye from the tournament for this season.
In the first ten minutes both teams did not take too much risk, both clubs tried their luck with shots from the distance. After ten minutes Lulea had the first Power Play of the game, but the hosts played a good boxplay and Capitals-goalie Matt Zaba was not to beat. Than it was the Swedish team, that showed more and more their skills. Cam Abbott had the best chance, but Matt Zaba was on fire once more and stopped the deflected shot. Lulea Hockey could not take advantage of another Power Play and so it was still 0:0 after 20 minutes.
After the re-start UPC Vienna Capitals had a Power Play, but Lulea showed a strong Penalty Killing. Then the Swedes took more and more the control of the game, but also Benoit Gratton and Co. stayed dangerous with shots from distance. The hosts became stronger as longer this period lasted and had some good chances after counter-attacks. The best chance missed Rafael Rotter, who was stopped twice by Lulea-goalie Johan Gustafsson. The game was hart fought, with both goalies playing on their best level and so the fans in Kagran also after 40 minutes still had to wait for the first goal in this semifinale.
In the last 20 minutes Lulea increased the pace and after 46 minutes Lulea broke the spell: With a shot from the blue line Lukas Kilström scored the lead. The puck first went on the post and then from Zaba into the net. Two minutes later Vienna lost Benoit Gratton with a Game Misconduct. The guests made pressure now: The Power Play stayed unused, but then it was Toni Koivisto, who decided the game: After his shot the puck went through Zaba’s legs. The Capitals put their goalie out and tried to turn the game around, but Lulea brought the win home. Lulea now plays tomorrow in Bratislava in the finals, while Vienna is out of the contest for this year.
Tommy Samuelsson, Headcoach UPC Vienna Capitals: „We played good, but missed to score some goals. Even we lost today, it was a good weekend!“
