Jerry Kuhn celebrates first shutout against Graz
HDD Telemach Olimpija Ljubljana recorded its second home win in a row, beating Graz 3:0 with Jerry Kuhn celebrating his first shutout in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. In Dornbirn, KHL Medvescak Zagreb obtained a hard-fought 4:2 win.
Moser Medical Graz99ers showed a bit more determination in the early stages of the game. Manuel Ganahl and Robert Wren forced a save out of Jerry Kuhn within the opening four minutes. Frederic Cloutier was called to action for the first time in 7th minute when Jaka Zdesar shot the puck. Before the net Matej Hocevar tried to deflect it but was unsuccessful. Brock McBride and Cole Jarrett later unsuccessfully tried their luck from the distance. The visitors came close to taking the lead in 12th minute. Fast play at the left wing saw Kristof Reinthaler pass the puck to Robert Lembacher. But the shot missed an open net and went wide. On more similar great chance was missed late in the 16th minute. This time the dragons made 99ers pay. Martin Oraze got to the cleared puck first but lost it to Ziga Pance behind the net. Olimpija’s #19 quickly fed it to Miha Verlic who left Cloutier no chance from between the slots.
With 2:46 gone in the second period Reinthaler got sent to the sin bin for an interference foul. With their second power play of the game Olimpija managed just a single shot on goal. But in 28th minute Olimpija scored for the second time when Ales Music found Jaka Zdesar. In his third senior cap the youngster finished the play like a seasoned pro netting his first ever goal in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. Afterwards Oliver Latendresse came close to scoring twice on power play but both times Jerry Kuhn got the better of his. As Olimpija returned to full strength Greg Day was left alone before Jerry Kuhn. With 1:29 left in the period there was a small altercation between Brock McBride and Taylor Holst. Both were rewarded 10min penalty for their performance while McBride got 2 more minutes for the initial foul that caused it all. The guests started the final period with 38 seconds left on the penalty but the dragons easily killed it off. As it expired Trevor Frischmon shot hard from top of the left slot but failed to score. Next Olivier Latendresse was left alone before Jerry Kuhn for the 2nd time in the game. Once more he failed to convert on a perfect chance. In 47th minute Mike Ratchuk got called for cross checking foul and was given 2 minutes time to cool down. With the perfect defending the dragons killed them off. With 10:22 left in the game Jan Mursak had enough of the 99ers antics. Kevin Moderer ended up on the receiving end of the fight and had to be helped off the ice. Both men received 5 minutes for fighting in the process. As play resumed 99ers were looking to cut the deficit in half but the finishing touch wasn't there. On the other side the dragons decided the winner in 55th minute. Mike Ratchuk got the puck, dribbled past two defenders and beat Frederic Cloutier under the crossbar. At the end Jerry Kuhn celebrated his first shutout in the league.
Bears keep up with Vienna
Exactly two months after their last meeting in Dornbirn, KHL Medvescak Zagreb were caught on the hop by Logan MacMillan who opened the scoring in the first minute. The Bears didn’t look worried and tied the game just 31 seconds later. Both teams played offensively-minded with the Croats having success once more when unmarked Brandon Buck turned the game round. And after a failed line change, Curtis Fraser put his side up 3:1, after a good pass by Dario Kostovic. In the second period the players didn’t give anything away for free again and both goalies showed their skills with several saves. Before the midway point of the game, Alex Feichnter pulled one back to make it a one-goal game. But the Croats moved up a gear, piling the hosts under pressure. The Bulldogs got over this time unharmed and tried to score the equalizer in the third, giving everything they could. Head coach Dave MacQueen relied on his two top lines at that moment but they were not rewarded for their effort. Goalie Robert Kristan performed well and in the final minute Gal Koren sent the game to bed with an empty net goal.
