Capitals win in Znojmo, Jesenice cut down Graz
UPC Vienna Capitals have beaten HC Orli Znojmo 4:2 in the qualification round and gained ground on Moser Medical Graz 99ers, who were beaten 4:3 by Lion-hearted HK Acroni Jesenice.
UPC Vienna Capitals started their game at HC Orli Znojmo with a great pressure and the red Eagles barely left their defensive zone in the first ten minutes - four of them playing shorthanded. But Capitals didn‘t score on any of their powerplays. The hosts didn‘t either, though they were offered a two minute 5-on-3-powerplay. Like Ondrej Kacetl before, Reinhard Divis remained unbeaten. The importance of winning a face off in the offensive zone was shown late in the first period and Jon Insana scored the opener. With the third powerplay, Vienna was offered a chance to score the second, even though it showed better combinations than in the previous ones, the score remained the same.
Eagles tried to vanqish the goal difference but their effort remained goalless. On the other side, Vienna only needed one big scoring chance to change the score. Marcel Rodman got a nice pass from Filip Gunnarsson. The second period was influenced by penalties, too. Although none of the teams scored on powerplay, Vienna managed to score shorthanded. Kacetl was trying to pass the puck to one of his teammeates but only hit a referee and the puck bounced right on the stick of Jonathan Ferland, who scored the third for Vienna.
Daniel Nageler’s breakaway early in the third period decided the game. Even though Znojmo showed a nice performance in the third and managed to score half a minute later, David Bartos’ and later Martin Planek’s goals weren’t enough for the home team to tie the score. Znojmo lost to Vienna 2-4.
Lion-hearted Jesenice trip up Graz
HK Acroni Jesenice was out of the race for a qualification, but credit where its due, the Red Steelers never left their stance and won the game. Tomo Hafner scored the first, following hard work by Andrej Zidan behind the net. Eleven minutes in, Manuel Ganahl scored a goal on a rebound to equalize, but Graz were taken of the rails quickly again. Branislay Bednik scored, with a little help from Freddie Cloutier in the Graz net. And only little later, Hafner scored his second of the night on a clever pass by Miha Brus.
Graz started better into the second period: Olivier Latendresse beat Michal Fikrt topshelf. Graz had the momentum, but Jesenice had the fighting spirit and got a leg or a stick in goalbound shots when necessary. And they needed just one counter attack. They got in the the 38th minute when Bendik set up Antti Pusa on a rush and the Finn beat Cloutier.
nervousness took over in the Graz team and Latendresse got expelled with game misconduct for an unnecessary hit on Nejc Berlisk.
New addition Brad Schell closed the gap in the third, but that was all there was to it as Graz dropped points against Jesenice in the second Qualification round game, too.
