Znojmo goes top after win over Graz, VSV beats Jesenice

HC Orli Znojmo took the lead in the qualification round with their first season win over Moser Medical Graz99ers. In Villach, HK Acroni Jesenice kept the game open until just before the midway point. In the end the Slovenians suffered a 3:1 defeat.

The match started quickly and already in the third minute, HC Orli Znojmo opened the scoreline. Jiri Beroun sent towards the goal a great one-timer, which got past goaltender Frederic Cloutier. The visitors wanted to respond immediately, but Ondrej Kacetl in the home goal showed some great saves and the forwards from Graz couldn't beat him, not even in two power plays, which the home team offered them. Besides that, Dustin Van Ballegooie and Mike Danton both received a personal misconduct penalty. Both teams had some problems with accuracy in passing game, but still could prepare some opportunities. Although the Austrians had some chances to score, the Eagles held their narrow lead until the break.

In the second minute of the second period, Jan Seda was sent out and Graz had another chance on power play. However, they weren't able to put it in and almost right away they offered a power play to the home team too. Antonin Boruta's effort from the blue line missed the net just by centimeters and Radek Haman was not able to capitalize on a rebound. The Eagles pushed the away side and locked them around their goal. Cloutier managed to block Martin Planek's effort and this time it was Adam Havlik, who tried his luck with a rebound, but he wasn't successfully as well as Peter Pucher, who missed the open net just a few seconds later. Since the home team obviously didn't have enough calm in the finishing, the goal came for the other side. Zdenek Blatny scored again against Znojmo, when he tapped in a blocked puck by Kacetl. Anyway, the home team continued in their pressure and created some other chances and Mike Danton restored their lead in 35th minute. The goal was a blast for the home players and Pucher scored another one just two minutes later, with a pull-in on his own shot. Even there were some other chances, the score rest 3:1 after the 40 minutes.

The Eagles continued with the same taste as they played in the second period and soon, they played another power play. However, they didn't take advantage of it, as well as of the following one. Petr Kanko and Danton got into a breakaway, but Kanko's pass was too long for the Canadian forward. Ten minutes before the final horn, the fans could see a fight between Jakub Stehlik and Guillaume Lefebvre, both of them obtained a classic major penalty, 5 minutes for roughing. Besides that, Ales Stanek received two minutes for cross-checking so the Austrians played a power play. Kacetl was ready and didn't let the puck behind him for the second time, even with luck, which showed, when Sebastien Bisaillon hit the post. Znojmo started to defend better and got into the offensive zone again. Although Havlik missed the goal from the circles, the home fans didn't have to wait with celebration for long, as Jan Lattner decided to shoot from the blue line and was accurate enough to increase the gap in the scoreline. The Czechs utilized their chance to move into first place in the qualification round.

Important victory for Villach
At the beginning of the game the fans saw a balanced match without any clear-cut chances. In the sixth minute Niki Hartl fired the first shot across the bows. At the end of the period the Carinthians took over control but Michal Fikrt rose to peak form. The starting period ended goalless because Mike Craig, Shayne Toporowski and Rob Shearer wasted chances with each passing minute. In the middle period both teams upped the tempo and Villach still was not able to capitalize on their opportunities. It lasted until 29th minute when Greg Kuznik made the breakthrough. The visitors were just back at full strength when the defender scored with a blueliner. Only five minutes later Stefan Bacher doubled the lead from the slot off a great pass by Tomaz Razingar. But the Red Steelers answered promptly, with a well placed shot from Branislav Bendik. The goal which left the scoring side only one down didn't bring the Carinthians out of their concept. With two minutes remaining in the period, Mario Altmann restored the two-goal lead with a blueliner. In the final period the hosts controlled the play making chances but Fikrt saved all eleven shots on his goal. Finally, EC REKORD-Fenster VSV celebrated the third consecutive victory in the qualification round.
