Medvescak wins in Nescafe Salata Winter Classic!
KHL Medvescak Zagreb have win the first of their Outdoor-games at the Salata-Open-Air icerink, beating HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana 3:1. SAPA Fehervar AV19 lost in Klagenfurt and the Inter-Austrian Clash went EC Red Bull Salzburgs way.
KHL Medveš%u010Dak hosted HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana in what was the first game of the Nescafe Šalata Winter Classic. Michael Ouzas started in goal for Medvescak while Matija Pintaric got the start in goal for Olimpija. Both teams struggled to find any rhythm offensively as the snow was falling hard which made the ice chippy and extremely difficult to play on. The puck was bouncing around and the teams didn’t create much in the first period. The only goal in the first period was scored by Olimpija after Brock McBride fired the puck from the right side, the puck took an awkward bounced and got through Ouzas’ five hole.
The second period started off similarly, but Medveš%u010Dak took advantage of the fresh ice and scored two quick goals. First, Matt Siddall capitalized on a bouncing puck in front of Pintaric, then, Alan Letang scored a powerplay goal by cashing in on a Pintaric rebound from a shot from the point. He pinched in and put the backhander top shelf.
The third period once again offered early action and Medveš%u010Dak scored on the counter as Olimpija hit the post. Adam Naglich deked around Olimpija’s defense, and Gal Koren tipped it in. In the dying seconds of the game Pintaric was pulled and as he was coming off he was knocked out by the referee and play was stopped prior to Medveš%u010Dak’s disallowed goal. That was the last action of the game. The spectators enjoyed a great party in the freezing cold as Medvescak closed the gap to top-placed Linz to four points.
KAC defeat Szekesfehervar
EC-KAC returned to winning ways despite being without Tyler Scofield, Stefan Geier and Tyler Spurgeon. The Red Jackets tried to put the presusre on early in the game. In the fourteenth minute, Mike Siklenka struck from the blue line to give the home side the lead. From then on, Klagenfurt somehow reduced the pressure, and SAPA Fehervar AV19 was in the game all the time: In the first, throughout the scoreless second and also in the third period.
Finally, seven seconds from time, Balazs LadaNYI" alt="Balazs LadaNYI" class="plStatsLnk" >Balazs Ladanyi was left all alone in the slot and he’s got the quality to use a chance like that to his advantage, leveling the score. Overtime was on the cards, most in the crowd thought, but then, Chris Brandner scored the game winner three minutes from time.
Turcos' debut ends with home win
In the Inter-Austrian clash, EC Red Bull Salzburg finally could started Marty Turco and the NHL-veteran prevailed. He made his presence felt as he quite loudly explained to team mate Markus Pöck that focus was needed on the ice following his catastrophic error which Turco had to straighten out.
The scoring was only opened in the second period: Ramzi Abid knocked the puck into the net following Matt Trattnig’s shot. Young Ralph Nachbauer hit the post and little later, the equalizer came: Danny Irmen surprised Turco right from the face-off. Turco shrugged that one off and his colleagues gave him the support he needed. Florian Mühlstein battled it out with Nachbauer and shortly after that, Linz got a penalty shot. Irmen ran in on Turco, who poke-checked the puck right from underneath him. Two Minutes from the interval, Manuel Latusa finished a clever pass by Thomas Raffl whilst shorthanded.
In the third, Michael Schiechl scored on a wrapshot and then, it was video review time, but Turco had in fact stopped Justin Kellers shot in time. Doug Lynch sealed the game with his 4:1.
