Zagreb with shutout win, sure victory for Ljubljana

The Pance Brothers scored four goals for HDD Olimpija Ljubljana when the Slovenians overcame EC Red Bull Salzburg 5:1. KHL Medvescak Zagreb overtook SAPA Fehervar AV19 with a 3:0 victory with Michael Ouzas celebrating his first shutout of the season. Plus: Inter-Austrian battle.

HDD Olimpija Ljubljana started the duel with Salzburg on the offense. In the third minute Andreas Kristler made an interference foul giving Olimpija the first power play. After circling around the net for 90 seconds Ziga Pance beat Thomas Höneckl between the legs. Less than two minute later the scoreboard read 2:0. After the face-off Ziga Pance fired a shot from the right slot past Höneckl. Pierre Page reacted right away with a change between the pipes as the youngster Phillip Zopf got his on ice debut. Half way through the period the visitors got a power play as the dragons made a bad change. But the best chance went to the home side with Brock McBride missing the target for an inch. Salzburg's only shot of the two minutes came with 6 seconds left on the penalty from Manel Latusa but J.P. Lamoureux saved without any problems. For the rest of the period both teams played with fire in the defense and many shots were blocked.
At the start of the middle period Höneckl returned into the goal and made a great save to Petr Sachl on a quick break. A minute later Jamie Fraser went to the sin bin for slashing. The visitors pressed hard but the dragons somehow held on. In 34th minute Höneckl saved to John Hughes but couldn't hold on to the puck. As the play continued the puck ended up at Jamie Fraser who blasted it past the goalie from the left slot. 24 seconds later the Bulls got one back. Ramzi Abid skated around the dragons net with the puck and beat J.P. Lamoureux. Early in the third Matthias Trattnig made a hooking foul on Eric Pance giving the dragons a two minutes advantage in numbers. Thomas Höneckl was quickly called to action and came through. As the visitors were back to full strength they got a power play of their own as David Sefic got called for tripping. As the dragons got back to full strength John Hughes took the puck behind his goal. He scatted coast to coast between the opposing players and around the Bulls goal back to between the circles. From there he shot, Höneckl saved but left the rebound away. Ziga Pance was there to collect on it netting his first hat trick in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. The fourth goal took the wind out of the Bulls as Olimpija took control of the game. Five minutes before the end of the game Ziga Pance found his younger brother with a wonderful pass from behind the back. Eric Pance took the puck on the right side and cleaned the spider webs from Höneckl's top corner with a diagonal bomb. With three minutes to go Salzburg got a 5-on-3-power play J.P. Lamoureux took care of all the shots on target.

Ouzas kept a clean sheet for Zagreb
With fifteen seconds into the game Arpad Mihaly fired the first shot of the match but Michael Ouzas, who got the nod over Robert Kristan, made the save. On the other side Tomislav Zanoski showed the first sign of life with a distant shot but Adam Munro saved, too. In the seventh minute Istvan Sofron had the best scoring opportunity when his attempt at the end of a breakaway only hit the post. Four minutes later the Hungarians were out of luck again when Ladislav Sikorcin struck metalwork for the second time. Then there was the time of Dario Kostovic: first, the Croat missed because of Munro but only few moments later he opened the scoring with a distant shot into the short side of the net. The Bears had the chance to double their lead but Ryan Kinasewich’s shot hit the post. With fourteen seconds left Zagreb increased its lead to two goals. Joel Prpic shot the puck towards the net to the arriving Andy Sertich who scored into the empty side of the net.
The first minutes of the second period went eventless with Fehervar willing to reduce the deficit. Ryan took the one-timer from a sharp angle on power play but Ouzas moved quickly from one side of the net to the other and kept a clean sheet. In the seventh minute Zanoski had a breakaway attempt but before he could take the shot he lost the puck although he was undisturbed. Shortly afterwards Ouzas stopped a huge onetimer by Mihaly. Marton Vas had the last chance of the period but missed a backhand shot. In the fourth minute of the third period Kinasewich passed towards the wing to Frank Banham who failed because of Munro. On the other side a shot by Balazs LadaNYI" alt="Balazs LadaNYI" class="plStatsLnk" >Balazs Ladanyi flew over the bar. After that, the Croats had the chance to make the preliminary decision. First, a blue liner from Sertich missed the target and then they couldn’t take advantage of two extra men on ice. While the teams were playing four on four, Andras Horvath fired a one-timer from the blue line but it landed in the glove of Ouzas. In the closing minutes SAPA Fehervar AV19 attacked hard after having pulled off goalie Munro but all their attempts got lost in the crowd. Zagreb finalized the result at 0:3 with an empty net goal by Adam Naglich.

KAC conceded two late goals against Linz
Both teams started very ambitiously into a fast-paced game. On the one side Thomas Koch and Martin Schumnig missed the best scoring opportunities, on the other side Rob Hisey failed because of Andy Chiodo. In the second period EHC Liwest Black Wings Linz piled the pressure and as a result Curtis Murphy made the breakthrough on power play. Only 17 seconds later Tyler Scofield brought off a great solo attempt to tie the game. The final period was leveled and the fans calculated on overtime. Four minutes before the end of the game Koch was ordered off the ice for delaying the game and Justin Keller quickly capitalized on the one-man advantage. Pulling their goalie with one and a half minute left in regulation, EC-KAC tried everything to score the equalizer but without success. Brian Lebler rounded off the scoring with an empty net goal.
