Shutout victories for the Carinthian teams

HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana suffered a 4:0 shutout defeat against EC-KAC on home ice. In Villach HC Orli Znojmo experienced an even worse outcome: the Czechs were beaten 7:0 by the Carinthians.

After just 40 seconds Paul Schellander's shot got stopped by the post. In the seventh minute the hosts had their second power play of the game but it was KAC with a chance to score as Justin Taylor lost the puck on the blue line giving the Carinthians a quick 2 on 1. Kirk Furey found Schellander but J.P. Lamoureux saved. In the 12th minute the visitors got their first power play as John Hughes took a hooking penalty. Ken Ograjensek wasn't too happy with the call and picked up a 10 minutes misconduct penalty in the process. KAC took 1:40 to break down the dragons’ defense: Thomas Hundertpfund got denied by Lamoureux but Christoph Brandner got the rebound between three green players and put it in the net. With a minute to go EC-KAC scored again when Johannes Kirisits got the puck past a screened Lamoureux from the left side.

In the 25th minute the visitor’s stroke for the third time. From the distance Maximilian Isopp hit Manuel Geier's stick and the puck went past Lamoureux. Only three minutes later the goaltender was under pressure once more when he saved an attempt by Raphael Herburger. Half way through the game Tyler Scofield got sent to the sin bin for hooking. Olimpija mustered some pressure but Rene Swette was insuperable. The chances on power play gave the hosts an extra boost of energy as they became more dangerous but there was no way past an excellent Swette. With 1:47 left in the period Brad Cole received a 2+2 minute high sticking penalty and the record-holding champions took just 47 seconds to score their second power play goal of the game. In front of the net John Lammers got the finishing touch. With five seconds to go in the period John Hughes got a shorthanded solo breakaway but his shot went wide.

In the final period EC-KAC left the initiative to Olimpija and concentrated on defense. Their play proved to be efficient as the visitors closed down all of the accesses to their net. In the 54th minute John Hughes got his second shorthanded breakaway of the game. This time his shot was on target but Swette answered with a save. Until the end of the game Olimpija had one more power play to their disposal but the history repeated itself and in the end Swette celebrated his second shutout of the season. With their win KAC remained fourth in the standings and now carries forward an extra point.

EC REKORD-Fenster VSV got off to a dream start in their home game against HC Orli Znojmo when Derek Damon made the breakthrough after 14 seconds. It went on this way but Marco Pewal and Rob Shearer missed their chances in the first minute. In further consequence the hosts were not able to convert the pressure into goals and the period ended with only one goal. At the midway point of the game VSV scored a brace to create clarification. First, Nico Toff doubled the lead with his second goal of the season and only 43 seconds later Mike Craig made it 3:0 from close range. Now the resistance was broken and late in the period Tomaz Razingar utilized one of several chances for the next goal. In the final period head coach Mike Stewart rested his go-to-guys but the fans saw another three goals for Villach. First, Derek Damon accounted his second of the game only after 30 seconds. With ten minutes to go Andreas Wiedergut and Shayne Toporowski scored a brace within 75 seconds to round off the scoring. The Carinthians secured the seventh place in the standings and welcome Znojmo on Sunday again when the Czechs will play their first away game of the qualification round.
