Zagreb celebrates sure victory over Ljubljana
KHL Medvescak Zagreb celebrated a comfortable 5:2 victory over HDD Olimpija Ljubljana for their third win in the Arena-series. After seven defeats EC REKORD-Fenster VSV was able to win a Carinthian derby again. EC Red Bull Salzburg put Moser Medical Graz99ers in their place.
In front of a great audience KHL Medvescak Zagreb had the better play but was not able to score. Late in the first Lamoureux stopped a lot of chances that could have resulted in a Medvescak lead. Olimpija’s goalie made the difference in the first 20 minutes when he saved attempts by Greg Day, Ryan Kinasewich and Joel Prpic. Frank Banham was the one to score right after the start of the second period as the puck fell right in front of him. Only 23 seconds later Kinasewich doubled the lead after a feed from Joel Prpic. The visiting coach Hannu Jarvenpaa immediately called a timeout to settle down his team. Consequently, Olimpija responded: Robert Kristan saved the initial shot from Ziga Pance but the puck bounced right to Matej Hocevar who scored into the empty net. On the other end Lamoureux continued play on high level making a good glove save on Kinasewich who scored few moments later on power play with Prpic having his third assist of the night on that goal. At the start of the third period Matt Siddall scored his first goal for Zagreb as he received a slow pass by Brine and buried it from the slot. Right after that, John Hughes went in on the breakaway but Kristan made a great pad save to preserve the big lead. Erik Pance reduced the arrears at 48:52 but the Croats had the last word when Andy Sertich scored on a good slapshot from the right circle after a faceoff.
VSV won derby on the road
In Klagenfurt the fans saw an evenly-matched Carinthian derby in the first period. EC-KAC made the breakthrough when Mike Siklenka fired home a blue liner on power play at 19:24. After four minutes in the middle period Joey Tenute extended their lead but the visitors fought back and Marco Pewal scored two minutes after the midway point of the game on power play. Early in the third period both teams had the opportunity to add another goal but Joey Tenute only hit the post and on the other side new arrival Rob Shearer failed because of Andy Chiodo. In further consequence, the visitors took several penalties but the record-holding champions couldn’t capitalize. With only one and a half minute to go Derek Damon pushed the game into overtime when he deflected a square pass. After a goalless overtime, EC REKORD-Fenster VSV broke their losing streak against their rivals when Gerhard Unterluggauer decided the game to their favor at the twenty-second penalty attempt.
Bulls overcame Graz
EC Red Bull Salzburg dominated the first 20 minutes of the play and outshot their opponents 18:6 but were not able to score. Robbie Earl had the best chance to take the lead but his attempt struck metalwork. Moser Medical Graz99ers resorted to breakaways but Toni Dahlman was stopped twice by Thomas Höneckl. Early in the second period Earl took advantage of a two men advantage to open the scoring. Only four minutes later Steven Regier added another power play goal to make it 2:0. But the Styrians grew stronger and equalized within two and a half minutes. First, Guillaume Lefebvre pulled one back on a breakaway and then Matthias Iberer deflected Sebastian Bisaillon’s shot. So the game was tied after two periods. The champion got things straight in the third period when Jeremy Williams, Doug Lynch and Thomas Raffl scored within two minutes. The game was decided although Olivier Latendresse scored with seven minutes to go. Only 46 seconds later Brent Aubin rounded off the scoring with his eleventh goal of the season.
