Ljubljana clinches playoffs, Znojmo beats KAC

HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana earned a playoff spot with a 4:2 home win against Moser Medical Graz99ers. HC Orli Znojmo drove home their first season victory over EC-KAC in the shootout.

HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana started with a quick 5 on 3 power play but the hosts couldn't find the target in the time. In the ninth minute Fabian Weinhandl came to the rescue saving to Jamie Fraser who was going at the net. Two minutes later John Hughes and Zdenek Blatny were sent to the sin bin at the same time for slashing and the 99ers quickly took the opportunity in a 4 on 4 play with Robert Lembacher's well placed blueliner into the far corner. With five minutes to go in the first Olimpija scored the equalizer: Ziga Pance set up Jamie Fraser in the middle and the puck went in the net from the defender. In 17th minute Toni Dahlman had a chance but J.P. Lamoureux was sharp enough for the save. Early in the middle period the fans got some extra excitement: Florian Iberer wanted to go at it with Ziga Pance who didn't need to be asked twice. After a few punches were thrown both ended on the ground in a draw. After five minutes Petr Sachl scored their first lead in the game off a pass by Erik Pance. At the midway point of the game Scott Hotham doubled the lead on power play. Five minutes later 99ers took another penalty. During that time Guillaume Lefebvre stole the puck and went alone at Lamoureux but the dragons goalie held on. With a second left in the power play Bostjan Groznik came within inches of his first goal in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. From the blue line Weinhandl was already beaten but the post was there to save him. Half way through the final period Bostjan Groznik again came close to scoring with Weinhandl making a save at the last moment. The play resulted in an Olimpija power play as 99ers got called for too many players on ice. On the power play Ziga Pance came close to adding an Olimpija fouth but Weinhandl again saved. In 54th minute the Styrians got back within a goal as Dahlman got a rebound past Lamoureux on power play. With 49 seconds left Graz pulled off the keeper but the dragons made them pay as John Hughes set up Matej Hocevar 19 seconds later for an easy empty netter.

Znojmo put KAC in their place
EC-KAC started well, but their pressure didn't last long. Both teams got into some chances in the first period, but none of them managed to open the scoreline. Despite there were few moments, in which Kacetl and Swette in goals had some work to do, the first period in Znojmo didn't offer any goals as well as any penalties and powerplays. That's maybe one of the reasons the game stayed goalless after the opening period. The second period looked like a copy of the first one. The teams had some chances and the game was played in front of both goals. However, all efforts were stopped by the goaltenders Kacetl and Swette. All efforts except one: the first penalty of the match came in the 38th minute and the Eagles took advantage of it quickly. Martin Podesva appeared alone in front of Swette and finished without hesitation. The Austrians weren't able to respond until the break so the Eagles went into the final period with a one-goal lead.
The visitors didn't have to wait for long until Markus Pirmann scored the equalizer. Znojmo tried to get back the lead and so they got a slight pressure. The second goal for home team came in 52nd minute from Adam Havlík's stick after a solo breakaway. The effort of Klagenfurt to equalize again was interrupted with two consecutives penalties, which offered a chance to score for the Moravians. However, they weren't dangerous for Swette so the Austrian team could score afterwards with a penalty shot. Tyler Scofield finished properly and equalized the scoreline again for the Austrians. The game went into overtime, when none of the teams managed to decide in the last minutes of the third period. Despite some shots, which appeared on both sides, the score resisted and the spectators could watch the shoot-outs, which had to set the winner. The final part of tonight's thriller belonged to the home team as they scored twice. The third goal was finally secured by Havlik because Scofield didn't get the puck past Kacetl this time.
