Jesenice jump to ninth at last chance

HK Acroni Jesenice leapfrogged HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana by thrashing EV Vienna Capitals 6:1, taking ninth place from their Slovenian rivals on the last game day. Similarly, Moser Medical Graz 99ers and EC VSV won their home games in style.

EV Vienna Capitals had left goalie Frederic Cassivi back home in Vienna and backup Rudi Hummel got hit for a half-dozen by a team that had nothing to win, but all to play for. Darryl Bootland and Daniel Nageler missed Viennas first chances before Gasper Susanj let a rocket loose from the Blue Line and beat Hummel. 60 seconds later, Dan Björnlie tugged in a rebound after Darryl Bootlands shot for the equalizer. From the beginning of the middle period, HK Acroni Jesenice took command, scoring at will. Rok Ticar got set up by Todd Elik for a tip-in and Ziga Jeglic had a goal disallowed for crease offside before Veteran Elik struck home himself. Kevin Gaudet took a timeout to break the Steelers’ momentum, but to no avail. Rob Sabolic and Ticar again put the game out of reach for anyone but Jesenice, who even added a sixth goal courtesy of Jeglic. Dov Grumet-Morris’ shutout bid had been ruined way before, so he made up by saving Francis Lemieuxs penalty attempt with three minutes to go.

Graz hammer Salzburg
Moser Medical Graz 99ers destroyed a very young EC Red Bull Salzburg team who had come to Graz with a very young squad. It was free-for all in a demonstration of dominance when Mark Brunegger, Markus Peintner (twice), Rod Jarrett, Nick Kuiper, Chris Harand and the ever-present Eric Healey all struck past David LeNeveu, who was left hanging out to dry by his Skaters, who had nothing to offer in resistance. Fabian Weinhandl will go into the play-offs confidently after this shut-out.

VSV cruise to win versus Linz
Birthday Boy Bernd Starkbaum wasn’t best pleased with Chris Ibounig ruining is shutout late in the game between EC VSV and EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz. Kiel McLeod struck twice for the Eagles, Mike Martin and Andy Kristler added one goal a piece in a game that neither side had to put to much energy into. VSV couldn’t have improved or lost ground no matter what the result, while Linz seemed quite ok with the thought of welcoming the Eagles in the Quarterfinals, starting Sunday.
